Be cautious of ads that ask large sums for "free" animals or that pressure you to take the animal on the spot with no checks.

Prepare before bringing the animal home: a quiet space, food, a bed, a vet check in the first days, and patience for the adjustment period, which can take weeks. If you cannot adopt now, fostering, volunteering and donations help in concrete ways.

Also factor in the costs of the first year, usually the highest: a full vet check, any treatment for problems found after adoption, neutering if not already done, suitable food, basic accessories and, ideally, a reserve for the unexpected. Many adoptions fail precisely because these costs were underestimated.
