Adoption & Shelters

Adoption & Shelters brings together the public and private shelters, animal-protection associations and fostering initiatives across Romania through which dogs, cats and other homeless animals find a home. It is the category you start from when you want to adopt rather than buy, when you have found an abandoned animal and are looking for help, or when you want to get involved as a volunteer or foster carer.

Responsible adoption starts with an honest question about your lifestyle: how much time you spend at home, what space you have, what monthly budget you can put towards food and the vet, what experience you have and what animal energy suits you. A serious shelter asks these questions too, not to put you off but to improve the odds that the match lasts for the animal's whole life.

When you choose a shelter or an association, check the conditions the animals are kept in, whether they are neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped before adoption, whether you receive the known medical and behavioural history, whether there is a settling-in period and support after adoption, and whether the adoption contract is clear. Be cautious of ads that ask large sums for "free" animals or that pressure you to take the animal on the spot with no checks.

Prepare before bringing the animal home: a quiet space, food, a bed, a vet check in the first days, and patience for the adjustment period, which can take weeks. If you cannot adopt now, fostering, volunteering and donations help in concrete ways.

Also factor in the costs of the first year, usually the highest: a full vet check, any treatment for problems found after adoption, neutering if not already done, suitable food, basic accessories and, ideally, a reserve for the unexpected. Many adoptions fail precisely because these costs were underestimated.
