You choose a breeder when you need predictable breed traits, temperament, size, coat type, energy level, for a particular lifestyle or activity. This choice comes with an extra responsibility: the way you buy directly influences which breeding practices are financially supported. Puppy mills and casual backyard breeders often produce unwell or unsocialised animals, sold with no guarantee.

When you look for a breeder, check whether you can visit the premises and see the mother with the young, whether the adults look healthy and balanced, what breed-specific health tests are documented, how many litters they have per year, at what age they release the young, and what conditions are in the contract, including a return clause if you cannot keep the animal. A good breeder asks you questions too and does not sell to the first comer.

Never buy from a car park, from a "made to order" transport, or from an ad that refuses a visit. Be patient, a serious breeder often has a waiting list.

The price of a puppy or kitten from a responsible breeder reflects the parents' health tests, the litter's veterinary care, food and the time invested in socialisation; a price well below the market is almost always a warning sign, not a bargain. Ask for an invoice or receipt and keep every document you are given.
