Bucharest/ Veterinary Oncology

Veterinary Oncology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of tumours in dogs, cats and other companion animals. A veterinary oncology consultation starts by confirming the diagnosis through cytology or biopsy, then stages the disease with blood tests, radiographs, ultrasound and, sometimes, CT, to see whether the tumour has spread. On that basis the oncologist discusses the options, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy where available, targeted treatment or palliative care, and explains realistically what each one aims for, disease control and quality of life rather than necessarily a cure.

An owner reaches an oncologist after a mass is found on palpation or at a check-up, after a biopsy returns a malignant result, or when a known tumour grows, recurs or causes symptoms. Decisions in oncology are personal and take account of the animal's age, other illnesses, the expected side effects and the family's resources, and a good oncologist supports an informed choice without pressure. Many protocols in animals are designed to be well tolerated, with milder adverse effects than in people.

When you look for a veterinary oncology service, check whether chemotherapy protocols are given under safe handling conditions, whether there is imaging access for staging, collaboration with surgery and with a pain-management service, and how monitoring between cycles is organised. Ask who answers questions between sessions and what home signs call for prompt contact. The cost depends heavily on the tumour type and the protocol and runs over several months; ask for an estimate for the whole plan rather than the first session alone, and ask what palliative care involves if active treatment is not appropriate.

Bring all previous results to the first visit, including the biopsy slides or blocks if you can obtain them from the laboratory, because a second reading can change the diagnosis and the plan. Use this directory to identify clinics offering veterinary oncology in your area, compare the services available, and open each page for contact details, a map and reviews before requesting an appointment.
