When you approach a shelter, look at the real conditions the animals are kept in, how many people actually care for them, how transparent they are about health status, and how the match between animal and adopter is made. A serious shelter asks for a conversation, sometimes a home visit, neuters before adoption, and stays available for advice afterwards. Avoid places that refuse any checks or will not let you see where the animals are kept.

If you want to help without adopting, ask for the current needs list, food, bedding, medicines, transport to the vet, and for the volunteering schedule. One hour a week, consistently, is worth more than a one-off gesture.

If you have found an injured or abandoned animal, call the shelter before you pick it up: they can tell you whether they have space, what to do until you reach a vet, and what paperwork is needed. Not every shelter can take an animal in immediately, but almost all can point you towards a solution.
