An adopted dog usually comes neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped, with a partly known history and a settling-in period during which its true character emerges, beyond the stress of the shelter.

You adopt a dog when you want a companion and choose to give a homeless animal a chance rather than buying. Before you decide, think realistically about the time you spend at home, the space you have, the monthly costs of food and the vet, the level of activity you can sustain, and what happens to the dog when you go on holiday. A dog lives more than ten years; adoption is a long-term commitment.

When you choose where to adopt from, look for an organisation that asks you questions, describes the dog's temperament and needs honestly, allows several visits and a get-to-know walk, neuters before handover, and offers support after adoption. Ask to see where the dog is kept and ask how it behaves with other dogs, with cats and with children, if known. Be cautious of anyone who pressures you to take the dog immediately or asks for large sums.

Prepare a quiet space at home, a lead and harness, food, a vet check in the first week, and patience for the first few months. Do not force interactions and let the dog adjust at its own pace.

Ask to take it for a walk before deciding and, if you can, come back two or three times: a dog stressed by the shelter behaves very differently after a few days at home. Ask the foster carer or the keeper how it is around food, noises, being alone and on the lead.
