Ilfov/ Cat Breeders
Cat Breeders covers the feline breeding catteries across Romania, usually specialised in one or two breeds, many registered with a cat club. A responsible cat breeder tests the breeding animals for the breed's common hereditary diseases, for example hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or polycystic kidney disease, raises the kittens in the home, used to people, noises and handling, releases them neutered or with a contractual neutering obligation, vaccinated and dewormed, and stays available for questions.
You choose a cat breeder when you want a particular breed for its appearance, temperament or care needs, or when you need predictability for a household with children or other animals. Read up beforehand about the breed's particularities, some have coats that need daily brushing, others are very vocal or very active, to be sure it suits you.
When you assess a breeder, ask what health tests are documented for the parents, at what age they release the kittens, earlier than twelve weeks is too early, what vaccinations and neutering are done before handover, what guarantees and what return clause the contract has, and what the environment the kittens grow up in looks like. Ask to visit and see the mother together with the litter.
Be cautious of "breeders" who always have several breeds available, release kittens very early, do not neuter and offer no paperwork. Be patient, most good litters have a waiting list.
Ask whether the kittens have been exposed to the vacuum cleaner, to visitors and to having their paws and ears handled, because socialisation in the first weeks decides how confident the cat will be for life. Ask for proof of the parents' testing for the breed's hereditary diseases too, in writing.
Use this directory to find cat breeders in your area, compare the information and reviews, and open each one's page for contact details and reviews before getting in touch, and ask whether you can stay in contact with the breeder after adoption for advice.
